An important chest of drawers/dresser by Arthur Espenet Carpenter featuring exaggerated dovetailing and striking vertical drawer pulls. It’s signed “Espenet 8906” (year 1989 and 6th piece he made that year). The dovetails are beautifully carved with ends extending, a nod to early arts and crafts through-tenon construction. Vertical drawer pulls appear to be ebony, the upper left pull being topped with a red enameled copper bar. We believe the wood is cherry burl. The grain is exceedingly rich. Espenet added different colored felts to the drawer bottoms, with the left and right sides matching. Chest measures 54” wide, 19” deep and 33" high. It floats above the floor, resting on a flared pediment base. The back is fully finished and is covered in leather. This chest of drawers is considered a one-of-a-kind Espenet work. He was declared a living treasure in 1984.
